About

Hello!

My name is Ruth (pronounced ruːθ where I grew up and ‘hutʃi where I live now). After getting married four years ago, I moved from the UK to Rio de Janeiro, where my husband and I have been living, working and raising our daughter in three of Rio’s thousand favelas, before we moved to a small town in Brazil’s rural interior last year. I currently spend my days attempting to keep my very active and vocal toddler safe, healthy and occupied. As a way of keeping myself sane and to help me process cultural, linguistic and other differences I drink lots of locally-grown coffee, try to get out into the natural world as much as possible, and write – spoken word poetry, short poems in English and Portuguese, and sporadic thoughts in blog form. This approach has questionable results but if it takes my mind off naps, nappies and não!s momentarily, then I’m all in.
